Archery GB’s Session Coach course prepares learners to deliver engaging sessions for beginners, including design and delivery of a beginner’s course, which is the most popular way for archery clubs to welcome new members.
This qualification is structured into the following module titles.
Each module is completed separately, providing greater flexibility to complete the learning around work and home-life.
Most modules are online and booked via Sport80 (link) and ArcheryGB recommend completing the modules in the order described, although they recognise this may not always be possible.
You can book to attend an online module at https://agb.sport80.com.
Online modules require users to have a good internet connection and basic IT skills. Further information can be found in the ‘Online Webinars Technical Support Guide’ below.
▶ Starting Your Coaching Journey (online 2 x 2hrs)
Being a coach is in itself a learning journey, where we adapt and refine our skills by learning from our experiences. This module identifies simple yet must-have skills for coaches, including how to use reflection and feedback to take action towards improvement.
Coaches are also expected to have a qualified coach a a mentor. Mentors support the Learner by helping with self-review and constructive help during supported practice. (This is different to the HGAC Mentor set out below).
▶ Empowering Archery – Part 1 (online 2 x 2hrs)
Empowering Archery™ focuses on how to optimise people’s experiences of archery and help them achieve their goals.
▶ Introduction to Technique (online 2 x 2hrs)
Every archer knows that learning good shooting technique early on sets you up for a happy and healthy experience of archery. From a coach’s perspective, understanding the basics of shooting form and teaching these to your beginners from the first session is really important.
▶ Creating Engaging Sessions (online 2 x 2hrs)
Coaching offers us a wonderful opportunity to offer new people to our sport something in life that is increasingly missing from day-to-day activities. This is a sense of achievement, development, and connection alongside the multitude of health benefits. But this doesn’t happen by accident, it takes a real coach to curate a session that has all the right ingredients for beginners to really enjoy and benefit from the session. This module invites coaches to explore how they can create sessions that meet their audience’s needs.
Coach candidates are expected to complete a certain number of hours of ‘supported practice’.
▶ Using your Coaching Skills (practical 1 day)
This module helps coaches to apply what they have learnt on the course, with a focus on using drills and skills to improve the quality of practice for archers.
After getting enough practice, coaches return for the final day of the course, ready to provide a sample coaching session with peers on the course. We’re not expecting perfection, as this is all about learning. We’re looking for coaches to apply what they have learned from the other modules.
▶ Supported Practice and Coach Presentation (practical 1 day)
Coaches are asked to practice their coaching (for example at their club), which can start as soon as they have completed a module of the course. It is important coaches pick a local mentor to provide support throughout this process; someone trustworthy and encouraging.
No Official Registration
Unfortunately, unlike the Level 1 course, where there was a course organiser, there is no course organiser for the Session Coach Course and therefore there is no official registration. This makes it very difficult for session 1 coaches to find their way around the new Session Coach system,
Hertfordshire Session Coach Registration Scheme
At HGAC, we recognise this, so if you are a coach in Hertfordshire, then we’re here to help.
We have created a Session Coach Registration Scheme for all archers aspiring to be a Session Coach.
This involves a voluntary no-cost registration scheme.
What happens if I register?
Registering will mean that HGAC know that you’re doing a Session Coach qualification.
Once we have your registration details, we will appoint a ‘Course Mentor” from our panel.
The Course Mentor is not the same as your other mentor. The Course Mentor is there to assist you finding your way around the rather confusing requirements for Session Coach.
You will also be provided with your own personal course tracking system.
This means that you will be able to keep track of which online modules you have booked and which you have completed and which you are likely to complete and when and details of your supported practice sessions, but most importantly this allows HGAC to see your progress and your HGAC mentor to assist. This is especially important when it comes to the two practical days and finding a place to carry out those practical days.
HGAC’s mentor will assist you finding the sessions where you can carry out the two practical days and we have a venue in Hertfordshire where we can arrange those sessions for Hertfordshire Archers.

Cost of the course
As a guide, to complete all the modules in the course usually costs from £250 to £275. This does not cover your travel to and from the venue, or any accommodation or meals.
The fees from the course are used to pay for the venue and equipment, the Coach Developers, the learning materials and certificates, back-office support and the costs for the behind-the-scenes development of the course.
If you are a volunteer coach and are coaching to benefit your club, we highly recommend enquiring with your club or county about financial assistance.

The practical modules are currently not taking place due to COVID restrictions. However, when they resume you will be able to find a practical module taking place near you using the Course Finder below.
